How to Oil Your Hair Properly: A Step-by-Step Guide
Most people oil their hair wrong — too little oil, too much scrubbing, and left on for far too long. Here is the method that actually works, in five steps.
The short answer
To oil your hair properly: warm 2–3 teaspoons of oil in your palms, part your hair into sections and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips for five minutes, draw the remainder through the mid-lengths and ends, leave it on for one hour or overnight, then shampoo twice with lukewarm water. Do this twice a week. Oiling before washing — not after — is what prevents breakage.
Hair oiling is one of the few beauty rituals in South Asia that predates the beauty industry, and one of the few with an actual mechanism behind it. The problem is that almost nobody was taught the method — it was absorbed by watching a mother or grandmother, and a lot got lost along the way.
Why do you oil hair before washing, not after?
Because the damage you are trying to prevent happens during the wash. When hair gets wet it absorbs water and swells — the cuticle lifts, the cortex expands, and the strand becomes dramatically weaker in that state. Repeat that a few hundred times and you get the split, frizzy ends everyone blames on shampoo.
Coconut oil is one of very few oils small enough to penetrate the hair shaft rather than sit on top of it, and it reduces how much water the strand takes up. Applied an hour before you wash, it means less swelling, less protein loss, less breakage. Applied after washing, it is just shine.
The five-step method
- 1Take 2–3 teaspoons for shoulder-length hair — more if yours is long or thick. Rub it between your palms for a few seconds. Body heat is enough; do not microwave the bottle, and do not heat a herbal infusion at all.
- 2Part your hair into four to six sections and apply the oil directly to the scalp. Use the pads of your fingers, never your nails, and move in slow circles. Five minutes total is plenty.
- 3Run whatever remains on your hands through the mid-lengths and ends, concentrating on the last four inches. That is the oldest hair on your head and the driest.
- 4Braid it loosely or wrap it in a cotton scarf and leave it for at least an hour. Overnight is better if it fits your routine, but it is not required.
- 5Shampoo twice with lukewarm water. The first wash lifts the oil, the second actually cleans the scalp. Hot water will undo the point of the exercise.
How often should you oil your hair?
Twice a week is the sweet spot for most people. Once a week works if your hair is fine or your scalp runs oily. Every day is counterproductive — you end up washing more often to remove the oil, and the extra washing costs you more than the oil gains you.
Give it eight weeks before you judge anything. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, so any change you see in week two is a change in how your existing hair looks, not in how it grows. That is still a real result — it is just not the one people are usually looking for.
Which oil should you use?
A coconut-based oil for penetration, lightened with something like sweet almond so it stays liquid and spreads easily, and infused with herbs rather than perfumed with fragrance. Check the label: if 'mineral oil' or 'paraffinum liquidum' is the first ingredient, you are buying petroleum with a green sticker on it. It will coat the hair and shine it up, but it cannot enter the shaft, which means it does not do the one thing that matters.
“The best hair oil is the one you will actually use twice a week for two months. Smell and texture are not vanity concerns — they are adherence concerns.”
